Toolkit Redesign Project
When I was assigned responsibility for Toolkit's design, the app had already been available for a couple years. I was charged with improving the user experience and redsigning the app with a more contemporary look and feel.
RESEARCH
My first step was to work with technical support to discover customer issues with the original design. We reviewed reported cases, user survey responses, and telemetry data related to user profiles and interactions. We identified several areas where the user experience could be improved.
Home Screen UI

Users didn't understand which activities are available for their device.

When multiple drives are connected, users could not readily see activities that were scrolled off the home screen.

Users did not understand the gauge displaying storage capacities.
User Actions

​Actions buried in secondary screens and menus were not easily discovered.
Branding

Users often didn't know that Toolkit is a Seagate or LaCie app.

REDESIGN
Based on our research, I developed a set of objectives for the redesign.
Simplified Structure

Eliminate unnecessary secondary screens and move associated information and controls to the home screen.

Move user actions from menus to dedicated activity screens.
Single Drive Focus

Since most users are only connecting one external drive, redesign the home screen to focus on just one connected drive at a time.

Include a drive selector at the bottom of the screen that allows users to view other connected drives.

Celebrate the product's industrial design by increasing the size of hero images.
Enhanced Notifications

Improve messaging for status updates by developing a toast notification system.
Improved Branding Awareness

Incorporate Seagate/LaCie branding in the app.

Add rounded corners.
